Andrew Neu

By blending a unique mix of jazz, R&B, classical and Latin music, Andrew Neu delivers a fresh sound to the contemporary music scene. Neu is well-respected throughout the industry for his work as a saxophonist, woodwind player, arranger, composer and recording artist. Whether he’s in concert as a solo artist or a sideman, Neu’s musicianship and engaging stage presence continue to get the attention of audiences and critics alike.

Regularly touring the country with Bobby Caldwell, Neu has shared the stage with Sir Elton John, Patti Labelle, Mellissa Manchester, Mel Torme, Diane Schuur, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Four Tops, and The Temptations among others. He has also recorded as a soloist with Sister Sledge, Manhattan Transfer, and jazz legend Buddy DeFranco. Neu has appeared at major festivals throughout the world and performed with jazz artists Brian Culbertson, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Mindi Abair, Euge Groove, Kim Waters, Steve Oliver, Warren Hill, Nick Colionne, David Benoit, Eric Darius, Shilts, Peter White, Chieli Minucci and Brian Simpson.

Fueled by the international success of Inspire (2000) and In Clear View (2007), Andrew makes his 2009 debut on NuGroove Records with ‘Try Something Neu’ along with labelmate Michael Lington. Debuting in the top 20 on the Smooth Jazz charts it was produced by Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb and Gerald Veasley and also features Bobby Caldwell, Brian Culbertson and Dan Siegel.

A long time member of Peter Nero and the Philly Pops Andrew has been featured as a soloist and an arranger with the Brian Pastor Big Band and the Dave Stahl Band for many years.

Try Something Neu (NuGroove Records) is packed with a colossal group of stellar all-stars that includes Bobby Caldwell, Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, Brian Culbertson and Gerald Veasley. The respect toward Andrew by his peers is evident in the musical conversations you hear in each track of Try Something Neu. “The sheer amount of stellar guest-stars packed into this CD shows you just how much this young talent is already respected in the industry. The future is very bright for Andrew Neu,” said David Chackler, President/CEO of nuGroove Records.

The musical conversations that flow throughout the CD create an electric energy that rivals what fans would expect at a live concert. For instance, you can feel the heat of the interchange between Chuck Loeb (guitar) and Andrew Neu (tenor) at the start of the first track, “Chez Cool.” As the story unfolds, the excitement builds and all the listener can do is hold on tight.

The first track designated to go to radio in both vocal and instrumental only form, “The Next Time I Fall (In Love) offers a romantic interlude with Bobby Caldwell featured on the vocal release. When asked to share his thoughts on working with Neu, Bobby Caldwell said, “When he invited me to participate in “Next Time I Fall” I was not only flattered that he chose one of my tunes but honored that he would ask me to sing it.”

Another standout track is the funk-fortified “The Nut” with special guests Brian Bromberg (producer/bass) and Brian Culbertson (trombone). Offering a deliciously danceable groove with a full-horn arrangement, “The Nut” gives listeners a sneak peek into Neu’s life as “one bad cat” on the bandstand.

A graduate of Temple University’s Esther Boyer School of Music, Neu is a voting member of NARAS and the Grammy Awards.

Airborne the “Musical Peacemakers” of Contemporary Jazz are rising higher and soaring on “New Horizons” with their new and 7th CD to date. The warm, yet cool atmosphere of this wonderful project takes you on a magical and musical journey to a new day filled with joy and hope. Its Smooth Jazz theme rides on the successful inspiration of their last Chart Topping CD “Winds of Change”. Groove music with depth and character that is captivating and entrancing. Joyful Jazz with a Message!

The CD expands the artistic World Fusion motif of their 2007 release of Turbulence and regenerates the soulful energy of their 2004 release of Heavy Vibes with its Latin grooves and R&B vocal arrangements. And for the first time Airborne has released a CD covering two great R&B Classics. Inserting the Airborne sound to “Sunny” written by Bobby Hebb and “God Bless the Child” by the amazing Billie Holiday. Giving this a unique pleasure for fans that know in Airborne concerts there is always crowd pleasing R&B vocal tunes mixed with the Airborne jazz compositions that rock the house.

In ancient times the word Horizons meant across the world. The music of Airborne reminds and encourages us that we can create a new world of peace. One world of people searching and waiting for a sunrise of happiness that is just over the new horizons. The emotion and passion of Airborne is a musical healer who keeps us closer to the light of truth and opens are senses to hear and feel that glorious message of love and compassion.

Communicating that all things are possible if we Live, Laugh and Love. To Live our life to fullest sharing goodness to others. To Laugh we can sustain our hopes through times of trouble. With Love we can do great things.

Combining inspiring compositions of genuine substance, performed by world class jazz musicians, Airborne is a living musical brotherhood with a trademark jazz sound of island passion and urban emotion. The “New Horizons” CD is a pleasant offering to jazz lovers who reach out for new expressions. Airborne gives one hope that contemporary jazz is still alive.

Smooth and Cool, yet Soulful and Hot, a great CD from start to finish. Real jazz by real jazz artists of integrity, whose inspiration and imagination capture your thoughts with music with a cause. Airborne shines a smile of heart and good feeling people really need from listening to music. Airborne captures this beautiful feeling and makes it overflow on each tune of this awesome and outstanding CD. Joyful jazz with an uplifting message of Hope, Peace, and Love!
These concertos, recorded with The English Chamber Orchestra and I Solisti di Zagreb, firmly established Daniel Smith as a leading soloist on his instrument.
Angela Scappatura is a classically trained vocalist and pianist who has always been drawn to the stories, intimacy and soul of jazz.

More than five years ago, singer, songwriter and pianist Angela Scappatura put her university career in Toronto on hold, packed everything she owned into the backseat of her beaten-up Plymouth and moved back to her hometown in northern Ontario.

Angela knew returning to her roots was the only way she could focus on developing as an artist while raising funds to record.

Soon after arriving in Sudbury, Angela took a job as a cocktail waitress in the only blues bar in town. Between serving up pints of lager and plates of nachos, Angela shared the stage with some of the visiting headliners.

One evening, during a performance by The Downchild Blues Band, Angela met Toronto-based producer and blues pianist, Michael Fonfara. He would go on to produce Angela’s debut album, A Little Bit of Sugar.

After months of planning and rehearsals, Angela packed up the same beaten-up Plymouth and made her way back to Toronto to record A Little Bit of Sugar, featuring a mix of traditional jazz and blues with original music written by Angela.

Since the release, Angela has opened for Ronnie Hawkins at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall, headlined for three months with her jazz trio in one of Hong Kong’s premier luxury hotels, performed at the Toronto Jazz Festival and won a Northern Ontario Music Award.

During that time, Angela also returned to university and completed a bachelor of arts degree in political science and a post-graduate diploma in journalism.

Produced by Michael Fonfara (The Downchild Blues Band, Foreigner), the recording features a host of Canadian musical heavyweights including Mark Mariash (drums), Danny Weis (guitar) and Pat Carey(sax). ‘A Little Bit of Sugar’ has garnered international coverage and radio play, with tracks regularly featured on Fresh Air /CBC, Jazz fm 91.1 and private radio. Other performance highlights include, Canada AM, the Beaches Jazz Festival, the Canadian Walk of Fame Gala and Telelatino.

Angela Scappatura continues to write and perform, carrying audiences to a place of romance, soulful sweetness and pure elegance.

Wray Downes has indeed earned the title of Grand Man of the piano. His career has spanned one-half of a century and his accomplishments & awards are certainly too numerous to recite. His superb playing has created many unique opportunities and led to breakthrough events, including becoming the first Canadian to win the Trinity College of Music Award (London, England).

Wray’s jazz roots are grounded in European studies with other burgeoning jazzmen like Sidney Bichet, Bill Coleman, Dizzie Gillespie and Sacha Distel. A busy and impressive career was to follow, challenging his multifaceted talents such as composer, arranger, conductor and performer. Throughout the fifties & sixties Wray balanced live performances with such respected musical peers as Sonny Stitt, Clark Terry, Lester Young, with his many responsibilities to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

The seventies & eighties saw Wray Downes performing, recording and touring in the United States and Canada including the prestigious Montreal jazz festival, gigs in Los Angeles performing on numerous NBC shows and more intimate club dates, all greatly contributed to the experience and musical sensitivity of this artist. Wray also played an important role in the recording of the Juno Award nominated recording “Bone’s Blues” with Pete Magadini, Dave Young and Don Menza, now a Canadian classic. His love of all things jazz also led to experiences as musical director with the Archie-Alleyne-Frank Wright Quartet, with vocalist Joe Williams, as assistant Musical Director with The Peter Appleyard Quartet and even to a stint as jazz announcer on Toronto’s CKLN radio.

Canada’s love and appreciation of Wray Downes’ enormous talent is apparent in a series of command performances for such distinguished guests as Nelson Mandela, the President of Finland and the then Prime Minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney. In the nineties, these events have been combined with a faculty position at Concordia University’s department off Music private studies program, several jazz festivals and steady appearances at both Montreal and Toronto’s major jazz venues.

David Restivo is one of Canada’s most respected and influential jazz artists. A critically acclaimed pianist and composer, he is well known for his decade-long tenure with Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass and Tentet, as well as his work with saxophonist Mike Murley’s quintet and legendary songwriter Marc Jordan. He has also performed and recorded with such musical luminaries as Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Charles McPherson, Marcus Belgrave, Moe Koffman, Mark Whitfield, Alex Acuña, John Abercrombie, Maynard Fergusson, Mel Tormé, Gene Bertoncini, Jerry Bergonzi, Ingrid and Christine Jensen, Joe LaBarbera, Pat LaBarbera, Don Thomson, Tim Hagans, and Curtis Fuller. As both leader and sideman he has graced stages at every major festival and venue in Canada, with performances also in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, and South America.

Honoured in 1997, 2002, and again in 2004 at Canada’s National Jazz Awards as Pianist of the Year, David was voted Toronto’s Best Keyboardist in NOW Magazine’s “Best of T.O.” reader’s poll in 1998 and received a Juno Award for his work on the 2001 recording The Rob McConnell Tentet (JustinTime). He has served on the faculty at Toronto’s Humber College and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, and is currently a full-time professor of music at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. He will be listed in the 2004 edition of Who’s Who in Canada.

Dave has been called “…eloquent…” (Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star), “…luminously crisp…” (Rex Reed, New York Observer), “[a] good messeng[er] of the blues…” (John McDonough, DOWNBEAT), “…one of Canada’s finest…”(Toronto Star), and “…one of the most burning piano players- period!” (Kenny Werner, jazz great). He can be heard on numerous recordings, including the Grammy-winning Mel Tormé/Rob McConnell collaboration Velvet and Brass (Concord Jazz), Mike Murley’s Conversation Piece (Cornerstone), Marc Jordan’s This is How Men Cry (Blue Note/EMI), and his own lauded debut Prayer for Humankind(ness) (Radioland/Universal). His music has been featured extensively on CBC radio and 91.1 Jazz FM.
