Somewhere (Blix Street Records 2008)
Eva Cassidy
The repository of accolades will again intensify, for Somewhere, has Eva Cassidy's enchanting aura rekindled; never to extinguish. With each spin from her captivating songbook, Eva Cassidy's warmth falls from our eyes. No thought, script, or judgment can offer justice to the impact Eva Cassidy and her storyline has on each of us.
Somewhere, released in August of 2008 by Blix Street Records, signifies another stage in a life, so quickly swept from humanities pages. This project is an eclectic array of the passions, feelings, and gifts from her reflective journey. Sliced in blues, country, and jazz; this Cassidy release is a science in composition; on course... in flight with attitudes.
Taken as I was by her release of "Over the Rainbow" ...I became even more intuitive to her insight and feel, by way of her arrangement and structure of Gershwin's "Summertime." Ms Cassidy succeeds in immersing her powerful and complex tones to take this classic to a higher ceiling.
Blues "Chain of Fools" is an outstanding template of the fire inside this tapestry of emotional embers. The performance has earthy sketches yet embroiders that hard core attitude; which defines a blues anthem. Eva Cassidy, as only Eva can, makes this complex hardened composition exhume surreal intensity. Kudos goes out to producer Steve Lima; for becoming the architect for this piece and sculpting its texture to Eva.
There is a line in the Cassidy title cut "Somewhere" which sums up this and all other Cassidy experiences "Once in a lifetime."
As a critic I can only forward this thought to all; Eva Cassidy is music's one intimate act!
