CD Reviews: Peter Buck “Buck’s Vibe” CD 2008 Independent
Posted by: editoron Thursday, February 12, 2009 - 10:11 PM
Reviews Glenn Astarita

Southern California jazz, pop, rock session ace and educator Peter Buck’s debut effort as a leader is an enormously impressive statement within the modern jazz realm. It’s sort of atypical, since many of today’s well-educated artistes seem hell bent on rendering chops-heavy antics while dishing out overly complex charts that frequently drift off into an emotionless void.

As a technician, Buck is a painter and superb accompanist who shades the hornists with accenting cymbal hits and prods the band via shifting dynamics. Many of these works feature radiant choruses built upon memorable themes and uplifting storylines. They raise the pitch and sport an omni-directional groove quotient. On “Going Through,” the quintet executes a brisk swing vamp amid ample doses of pop and sizzle. Then Buck launches a melodic solo while venturing into a two-way Latin vibe with pianist Eli Brueggemann, paving the way for trumpeter John Daversa’s soaring lines.

The ensemble generates high-heat as a vehicle for the soloists to stretch and reformulate many of the primary motifs by carefully reconstructing and refreshing a given song-form back into its inherent makeup. As the musicians finalize the gala on a quiet note during the piece titled “Softly Glancing.”

Simply stated, these compositions impart a lasting impression. The drummer and his band-mates convey restraint and sensitivity to coincide with their laudable musicianship and acute improvisational tactics. Serious jazz aficionados should definitely pursue this gem of an album by a drummer who should get his jazz voice out to the consuming public more often. – Glenn Astarita

Personnel: Peter Buck: drums; John Daversa: trumpet/flugelhorn; Robby Marshall: tenor saxophone; Eli Brueggemann: piano; Edwin Livingston: bass
