Cuba: Island of Music
Award-winning filmmaker and producer Gary Keys traveled to Havana in December of 2000 to teach a master class on his craft. While in Cuba, Keys shot footage of what became Cuba: Island of Music. Keys, who has also directed live concerts for Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stevie Wonder and Chuck Berry, wanted to feature the cultural significance of the Afro-Cuban sound. Therefore, his work is raw, yet enlightening. The film ripples with the loose, yet vital ebb and flow of a jazz jam session. Scenes with noted jazz icons Dr. Billy Taylor and the late Chico O’Farrill help to explain the relationship between Afro-Cuban music and the broader jazz idiom. A visual tapestry of old cars, street musicians, big bands, dancers and religious rituals, “Island” takes us on an virtual journey through culture, politics and of course, music.

With the launch of Gothamjazz.com in April 2002, Keys had a suitable production team to compliment the vibrancy of his project. Led by Executive Producer Ben Pomeroy, Gothamjazz.com Productions injects fresh spirit into “Island,” for this exclusive June 12 screening. Pomeroy and his staff have polished the film, making it more cohesive, while ensuring the integrity of Keys’ vision.

As a compliment to the film, the evening will close with a live performance by this New York City jazz stalwart. Chico O’Farrill’s son Arturo O’Farrill, who conducts Lincoln Center’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, continues his father’s legacy with dynamism. The Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band performs with infectious energy each Sunday night at Birdland in Midtown New York

Symphony Space is located at 2537 Broadway at 95th Street,
