CD Reviews: Ed Palermo Big Band “Eddy Loves Frank” CD-2009 Cuneiform Records
Posted by: editoron Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 03:19 PM
Reviews Glenn Astarita

Bandleader Ed Palermo’s third release of Frank Zappa compositions is a persuasive and deeply personalized revitalization of the artist’s songbook, as he continues to spin a thoroughly hip vibe during the processes. With his sixteen-piece band, executing difficult charts, Palermo’s horns arrangements are teeming with polytonal layers, crisp accents and gobs of verve.

On “Echidna’s Arf (Of You),” the rhythm section lays down a straight-four rock pulse, segueing to thorny time signatures and abrupt shifts in the overall dynamic. Here and throughout, Palermo offers multiple mood-evoking thematic forays, including nicely placed dabs of humor, and warmly designed choruses.

Saxophonist Phil Chester, trumpeter Ronnie Buttacavoli and others, engage in ballsy soloing spots via the odd-metered metrics and thrusting crescendos to complement some straight-ahead swing breakouts. The band is a precision machine, keeping in line with Zappa’s intricately engineered movements and seemingly impossible time signatures.

Palermo renders the largely, melodic primary themes with a modernist-like flair. And they proceed with a sense of jubilance, accelerated by Ted Kooshian’s jazzy Hammond B-3 solo during “Let’s Move To Cleveland,” featuring wah-wah trumpet lines and spiraling flutes. Nonetheless, the big band moves forward with lively reflexes, fierce power and the ability to reverse engineer a micro-motif on a nanosecond’s notice. It’s all topped off by a highly-entertaining form factor. – Glenn Astarita
