CALGARY – Vertigo Theatre has announced that its 2009-2010 season benefit for the Actors’ Fund of Canada will be a benefit performance of Evelyn Strange on March 14th, 2009. The play, a film noiresque tale of a beautiful amnesiac who discovers a troubling secret, is by Alberta playwright Stewart Lemoine and has been performed across Canada to rave reviews since its creation in 1995.
"Holding a benefit for the Actors' Fund is something we are always proud to do,” said Vertigo’s Artistic Director, Mark Bellamy “A life in the theatre is not an easy career choice and everybody working in it knows that the factors that make the Fund necessary could affect any one of us at any moment. I know several artists who have benefited from the Fund in times of need and it is marvellous to know that, in a crisis, we have somewhere to turn. By supporting the Fund we can all rest a bit more secure knowing that should we ever need it, the Fund will be there to support us.”
The Actors’ Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada’s entertainment industry. Performers and others who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund, which recently set a new record for the amount of financial aid delivered to industry members in a single year, topping $600,000 in 2008. The Fund has helped over 10,000 entertainment industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship since it was founded in 1958.
The Fund is a registered charity that has paid out over $3.7 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses in the last 10 years. Performers, creators, technical staff and other production team members can benefit from the Fund, which receives no major government funding and is sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
In recognition of 50 years of outstanding service to the performing arts, the Fund received a 2008 Honorary Betty Mitchell Award, presented by Calgary’s theatre community.
