JazzCorner.com's November Newsletter
There is so much happening around the "Corner, we need about 3 newsletters tell you what's going on and what we have in store for you for the holiday season. First of all we welcome to the JazzCorner.com family:
Rick Gilbert - His passion for jazz exudes through every photograph he takes. Just take a look at his galleries for beautiful, professional photography.
Trumpeter Chris Pasin recently made his rentry into jazz after a long hiatus. He's played with many of the greats, before leaving jazz for several years. To celebrate his return, and give a glimpse of more great things to come, he's brought out a never before released gem from 1987 titled Detour Ahead, featuring him alongside a band of Dannie Richmond, Rufus Reid, Benny Green, and Steve Slagle. The results are so vibrant and alive, that it's hard not to wonder why they fell into the vaults in the first place. As JazzCorner builds his beautiful new site, you can hear sound bites and learn a bit more on Chris by clicking here.
Oleg Kireyev - JazzCorner's first Russian client, but more than that, a great saxophonist and promoter of jazz in Moscow.
The Jazz Drama Program - Spearheaded by musician and educator Eli Yamin, The Jazz Drama Program embraces jazz as a global model for teamwork, innovation and inclusion by presenting concerts, plays and educational workshops.
JazzBows was started by the late reknown violinist Gayle Dixon for everything relating to jazz "strings," especially Black string players and information. Now, Gayle's sister, cellist Akua Dixon is administrating the site and JazzCorner.com was selected to revamp it as well as host it. While it's being reconstucted, you can still click on JazzBows.com and find a wealth of information and education materials available.
Jody Sandhaus is a unique vocal interpreter who John Williams, writing in "HOT HOUSE NY" says, "Jody sings so gently and carefully about love that we are encouraged to imagine and define with clarity our arrival to love and our continuance in that dream." As JazzCorner builds a new site for Jody, you can still listen to her sound bites including her brand new CD, AfterGlow by clicking here.
Pianist and Vocalist Scotty Wright spends a lot of time performing in the Far East, but we managed to catch up with each other at the Monterey Jazz Festival (after Scotty read on JazzCorner's Speakeasy in our Jazz Festival section and JazzCorner's fan page on Facebook that I was making my first foray to Monterey Jazz, and he sought me out. I'm so glad he did, since we are now building a new site for this very talented artist. Check out all his videos on JazzVision - where you upload and share your own videos - especially Scotty's version of " The Girl From Ipanema" recorded last year at SiChuan Conservatory of Music in China.
JazzCorner.com is very pleased to continue our relationship with Motéma Music who are presenting Fortuna the latest release from JazzCorner.com family member, Roni Ben-Hur who Francis Davis in the "Village Voice" called, "a guitarist with a veiled tone and hornlike attack like vintage Kenny Burrell."
Fortuna, the seventh, and extremely fine release from the ever melodic and swinging guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, is aptly named after the goddess of good fortune and features lush Sephardic, Latin, Folk, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban-tinged arrangements of rare jazz standards along with Ben-Hur's beautifully crafted originals. The late, wonderful pianist Ronnie Mathews appears on Fortuna in one of his final recordings. Add Rufus Reid on bass, Lewis Nash on drums and percussionist Steve Kroon to the line-up on Fortuna, and you can assume with this stellar line-up you're in for some smokin' music. But just to assure yourself, listen to soundbites and download Fortuna at Motéma's website
Besides being an amazing, fluid guitarist, Roni is an established, world respected educator and has authored 3 instructional books in his series Talk Jazz. They have been just added to the JazzCares shop, where a portion of the proceeds of everything you purchase goes to the Jazz Foundation of America. Jazz Cares: recording musicians helping musicians in need.

Steve Wilson returns to The Jazz Standard in NYC, December 17th through the 20th with his Joe Zawinul Project. He will be bringing an all-star ensemble: Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Danny Grissett on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass and one of Steve's favorite drummers, Lewis Nash. They will be playing the music of the brilliant Joe Zawinul; some of Joe's lesser- known music, but definitive of his evolution as a player and composer. With that in mind, the three Zawinul recordings that are the centerpiece of this project are "Soulmates" (with Ben Webster), "Money In The Pocket," and "Rise and Fall of the Third Stream." Wilson will include "In A Silent Way," "A Remark You Made," and perhaps some of his material from Cannonball Adderley, Weather Report, and The Zawinul Syndicate. Sure to be included will be "74 Miles Away," and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy."
JazzCorner.com Innerviews
Our JazzCorner.com InnerViews and shorter "Jazz Perspectives" average more than 1.5 million downloads/accesses per episode.
About 2 years ago, we first "InnerViewed" Sachal Vasandani on the release of his Mack Ave. Records debut, Eyes Wide Open. We had another chance to talk with Sachal during the 2009 Detroit Jazz Festival about his latest release, We Move. Sachal has gone through a lot of changes, a lot of growth and a new musical maturity as demonstrated on We Move, as we hear through his words and music on this special JazzCorner.com InnerView..
Sachal is currently on tour, and his radio promotion is by JazzCorner.com client, Groov Marketing. And we add, the publicity for Mack Avenue Records is done through. DL Media and Sachal's booking is yet another JazzCorner.com client: Unlimited Myles. We're really keeping it in the JazzCorner.com family.
Coming up in the next few weeks, JazzCorner will be streaming and feeding to ITunes, Facebooks, etc. Jazz Perspectives on Jazz Flamenco, Al DiMeola and Jackie Ryan. The longer length JazzCorner InnerViews will include: Stefon Harris, Randy Brecker, Kenny Barron and Janis Siegel, Carl Allen/Rodney Whitaker and we continue our oral history with Gerald Wilson.
