Jazz Festival Comes of Age in Philadelphia
Posted by: fluzion Monday, January 25, 2010 - 11:35 AM
Jazz Education Please Touch Museum's Junior Jazz Festival is Philadelphia's only event dedicated to introducing young children to the wonderful world of jazz, and this year the festival is celebrating its 18th Birthday with five weeks of live music, theater performances, and educational activities focusing on musical expression and the history of jazz.

Top kid-friendly musicians will take the stage of the museum's theater on each weekend between January 30 and February 28. The schedule includes the renowned Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble (Jan. 30-31 and Feb. 20-21), a longtime festival favorite, along with the University of the Arts School of Music (Feb. 6-7), Louie Miranda (Feb. 13-15), newcomers the Francis Coates Ensemble (Feb. 27) and Putumayo Kids (Feb. 28).

Kids will also learn a bit of jazz history by taking in weekday performances of "Scat Cat's Junior Jazz Jamboree." This interactive theater show tells the "tail" of an everyday alley cat who happens upon "Max Roach," who teaches her the history of jazz. Max also introduces Scat Catr to some of the well known artists who made it popular – Stingray Charles, Bunny Goodman, Louie Arm and Hammerstrong and Piggy Lee. "Scat Cat's Junior Jazz Jamboree" will be on the Please Touch Playhouse stage weekdays February 1-26, with performances Mondays- Fridays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. All performances are free with museum admission.

Please Touch Museum at Memorial Hall in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park is dedicated to enriching the lives of children by providing learning opportunities through play. Located at 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Please Touch is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. -5 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults and children age one and over. Children under one are free. For more information, please call 215-581-3181, or visit http://www.pleasetouchmuseum.org.
