Hailed as one of the finest artists working in modern jazz, soprano sax player and flautist Jane Bunnett has earned a reputation as a brave musical explorer. In Spirits of Havana, Bunnett bridges two cultures while creating some of the most joyful sounds in jazz.
Shot on location in Cuba, Spirits of Havana, a Genie nominated documentary, follows Juno Award winning Bunnett as she travels across the island with her partner, trumpeter Larry Cramer. Through the film, Bunnett realizes a long-standing dream of showcasing the diversity of Cuba's rich musical legacy.
Surrounded by the historic charm of Old Havana, Bunnett and Cramer reconnect with old friends and some of the city's finest musicians. Their travels take them to smaller towns Cienfuegos and Camaguey, where they hook up with some of Cuba's most celebrated musicians, such as singers Bobby Carcasses and Amado Dedeu, for a high-powered recording session.
"The greatest thing about being a musician," Bunnett says, "is that you get to travel to places and quickly establish a rapport with people with whom you might not be able to communicate in any other way."
High points of the film include performances with Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, one of the country's oldest and most celebrated Afro-Cuban rumba groups, and Desandann, a unique choir that sings in Haitian Creole. The film highlights Bunnett's friendship with legendary singer Merceditas Valdes, with whom she has performed and recorded.
Bunnett's Cuban Odyssey CD was chosen as the winner of the best world album category at The Urban Music Awards. Cuban Odyssey also won in the Best Latin Jazz Album category - Jazz Journalist Awards.
"... a documentary film filled with memorable images and gorgeous music ....watching Jane Bunnett and Grupo Vocal Desandann making transcendental music together qualifies as a personal highlight."
Errol Nazareth Eye Weekly
"The film captures the laid-back pace of a Havana recording session--with breaks in between each number for the players to flirt and banter, eat and drink...."
