Jazz News Jacqui Naylor - A Free Spirit Voice with Focused Direction!

Think of a free spirit coming at you from all directions with a talent so stimulating and alive it excites your every moment. Vocally she has the range that takes you from seduction to compassion in a split second. Lyrics that have purpose and meaning not unlike that of the artists of the 60’s but with the impact and delivery of today. That talent is very much here and offered to us, the listening public, in the name of Jacqui Naylor from Ruby Records.

Jacqui, pronounced Jackie, Naylor is an advocate artist who can put her ideals and visions to song, with great precision. Shelter, her new CD off of her own label Ruby Records, shows the music industry, that independents are a potent and stimulating source of refreshing talent. She brings hope to many up and coming Jazz musicians, singers, and songwriters, just by her ideals and drive. I had a few moments with her at her home in San Francisco let me share!

To understand a talent is to know them as a person, Jackie explains, “I feel like I am a spiritual person, I feel like I try to bring my genuine qualities to all that I do, and that includes my singing. I have been singing Jazz for a number of years, was trained as a Jazz singer.” As for her new album Shelter, “Shelter is a mixture of things I have written and a couple of covers. That was always a dream of mine to actually do an album that I could write songs for. This is a little more edgy than the other two albums which consisted more of standards.”

“ I feel as though I was so ready to do this.” talking about the progression of getting to Shelter. “ There is no question whether it was so easy or so hard. I felt it was so easy because I had a good writing partner in Art Khu, who had been in my company on a tour a number of years ago, we decided to do this together. It came about very organically. We took about a year to write, produce, make the record; nine months were just dedicated to writing it. Art plays many instruments so we got to write from many of them.”

The hard part was which tunes to do. Jacqui wanted some Bossa Nova, Rock, and other flavors. Doing right themes and nuances, choosing those specific sounds was a chore. Shelter, accomplished all of that and more! “ Whether it’s a Jazz, Rock, or a standard tune, if I cant put my whole being into it, then why sing. I want to connect with people, whether it’s a live show or a recording.” Jacqui states. With all the work put forth by Jacqui and Art, they have connected in a very large way. This project is as good as it gets for a first listen. Shelter will drive you into replay, fine piece of work.

With the music industry being so antiseptic to imagination and creativity, I asked Jacqui to comment on the state of music, “ Ha! Has everyone laughed?” She chuckled. “I think the industry is failing in a lot of ways, certainly in bringing talent to the forefront. I think that budgetary influences are making it harder on the larger labels. Harder in the sense to invest in a new unproven talent. On the other hand we see things like Norah Jones who has a beautiful voice and has put an album together that uses real musicians, tunes that people can connect with. That gives me some hope. Consumers ears are ready for something to test the waters a bit more than maybe Britney Spears does.”

She also wants to make clear that there are some great things happening in independent music. With her own record label, the reason behind its creation was not to fall prey to everything that is happening in the music world. So there in lies the lesson to all independent talents, it can be done! In her case all Jacqui needs to do is open her mouth and sing, no marketing needed. She is a force in Jazz!

What in store for Jacqui’s in the future? Well for one she will make a major impact and quickly become a front-runner the Jazz genre. Art and Jacqui are collaborating on another project for 2004 and a few Holiday tunes for the season. Also more touring is in the mix:
