New York, November 22nd, 2004 – Emmis Communications property CD101.9, New York’s “Smooth Jazz” WQCD has evolved its Smooth Jazz format into CD101.9 New York Chill.
The evolution comes in response to the growing worldwide popularity of “Chill” music, it’s relevance to the New York City musical landscape and the station’s current “Smooth Jazz” format. CD101.9 New York Chill will remain loyal to its current audience by continuing to embrace Jazz artists that remain the core of modern jazz, including George Benson, Sade, Boney James and Dave Koz to name a few. The introduction of the Chill genre will be evident in an expanded playlist to include Chill attitude and artists. CD101.9 New York Chill will be New York’s home for the chill music vibe, including crossover artists like Chris Botti - who is currently touring with Sting and was recently named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People.
Chill music has its roots in pop, electronica, world music, and jazz, and since its beginnings in the resorts and clubs of Europe, has already become a worldwide phenomenon. It has never been on showcased on American radio like it will be on CD101.9.
“Chill is the logical evolution for smooth jazz - popular smooth jazz artists like trumpeter Chris Botti, keyboardist Brian Culbertson, saxophonist Dave Koz, and prolific producer Paul Brown are among the many already incorporating elements of chill into their music” stated Blake Lawrence, Program Director of CD101.9. “With chill we are able to incorporate many more contemporary textures into our format, as we strive to bring in new listeners while still pleasing our loyal core audience. Our fans can still use CD101.9 the same way they always have – for taking the edge off their busy day at work, setting a relaxed mood, calming down in traffic, and unwinding at home – we’ve just added more interesting sounds and more variety to CD101.9.”
In a radio landscape that is increasingly challenged by stale playlists and increasing alternatives, Emmis Communications is taking a leading role in revitalizing the “Smooth Jazz” format, and effectively launching the “Chill” music genre in America.
“Emmis Communications has always been a programming leader in the radio industry, and a trendsetter in evolving successful formats – including Power in LA, WFAN, Hot 97 and now, CD101.9 New York Chill in New York City” stated Barry Mayo, Senior VP/ Market Manager of Emmis Communication New York. “We are excited about providing New York listeners with a hip, sophisticated, uncluttered music presentation that will continue to be extremely appealing to our premier advertisers.”
