Posted by: editoron Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 10:20 AM
Jazz News WORLD CLASS JAZZ PARTY SET FOR MARBELLA

The 4th Marbella International Jazz Festival, organized by the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Marbella, will take place from the May 7th to 14th 2005 with an international array of jazz artists in an extended programme.

Building on last year´s successful 4 day festival with 28 performances, 2005 is set to present nearly 60 shows over 8 days, and the even better news is that more than 90% is free to the public.

Bands from Spain, USA, United Kingdom, Holland, Germany, Hungary and Ireland are jetting in, with jazz tourists from all over Europe expected to join in with Marbella´s annual jazz party.

The line-up of headline attractions includes the only date in Spain for jazz supergroup ARCHIE SHEPP / ROSSWELL RUDD QUARTET with REGGIE WORKMAN and ANDREW CYRILLE. Shepp collaborated with John Coltrane, Max Roach and many others, and is a leader in the field of free jazz.

They will share the stage at the Palacio with a Spanish debut for KYLE EASTWOOD SEXTET, the all-star band led by the son of CLINT EASTWOOD. Kyle provided the music for the multi- Oscar winning movie “Million Dollar Baby”, while Clint makes a cameo appearance on Kyle´s new CD.

Two of the greatest singers in the history of jazz re-unite after 22 years in a show that has its only appearance, anywhere in the world, in Marbella. The legendary ANNIE ROSS who shot to jazz immortality with her amazing vocalese on “Sing A Song Of Basie” with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, teams up with OSCAR BROWN JR, whose albums “Sin and Soul” and “Kicks & Company” are still legendary and led him to perform with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly. Their Pianist is the hottest new jazz talent in the USA, TARDO HAMMER playing for the first time ever in Spain. Tardo will also have own feature presentation within the festival. Another fabulous evening of jazz is promised with two great names, ROY AYERS UBIQUITY from Los Angeles and THE LARRY CORYELL TRIO from Galueston, Texas, will link up for a double-header presentation again, unique in Marbella.

A critically acclaimed tribute to Billie Holiday, LADY SINGS THE BLUES features the remarkable jazz singer VAL WISEMAN together with a seven piece band of the best British jazz players including BRUCE ADAMS and ALAN BARNES. They will play a programme following the career of Billie Holiday Chronologically through the 30s, 40s and 50s with the original band arrangements exactly as they would have been heard in Harlem´s jazz clubs during the Golden Era.

Two young American jazz singers both making their first European performances, are MAGGIE BROWN from Chicago, the daughter of Oscar Brown Jr and singer / guitarist SUZAHN FIERING from Buffalo, New York, who is being hailed in America as the new Norah Jones.

The Festival will open with a gospel concert in the Iglesia de la Encarnación featuring VOICES OF PRAISE with CYNTHIA UTTERBACH from New Jersey, JOAN FAULKNER from Gary, Indiana and REVEREND LEE BROWN from Tropeka, Kansas.

As well as the concert presentations in the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos, performances will take place throughout Marbella, in shopping centres, the Casco Antiguo, on the beach, in the street, in Puerto Banus, Ojén and Casares.
