CD Reviews: Roberto Magris Europlane Check In..Soul Note 2005

By John Gilbert
This album features a tight ensemble with two saxes and the rhythm, plus a conga on track 3. These musicians work well together and demonstrate a cohesiveness that makes it mesh like well oiled gears.
"I Remember You" finds the two saxes of Tony Lakatos and Michael Erian on a somewhat long and taxing intro that eventually evolves into a delightful melodic
interplay between the two, followed by a blistering piano solo by Roberto Magris.
"What Blues?" is done at a jaunty tempo that goes right to the heart of
bop. The saxophones in unison are a brilliant touch. This tune moves
nicely behind a solid arrangement.
"I Concentrate On You" Again the saxophones spell out matters with the
drums pleasantly unobtrusive in augmenting the soloists efforts.
Magris's piano solo is as hip as it gets with flowing ideas and
interesting phrasing.
This album demonstrates professionalism at the highest level and will
get a multitude of spins in anyone's collection.
