CD Reviews: JazzTrenzz : Tom & Joy - Antiqua
Posted by: Adminon Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 12:00 AM
Reviews By Karl Stober

As autumn winds clear a path to make its presence known and you look towards the skies watching the clouds roll by in rhythmic sequence rest assured that Tom & Joy are the soundtrack for its entrance. Tom & Joy are everything that is right with life if their music was the deciding factor. All one has to do to be convinced is spin their newest project Antiqua released by Tommy Boy in 2005, this effort is as eclectic as life itself. Music that offers the listener the only mood swing experience with positive overtones, multi-lingual and genre savvy!

Antiqua is a jazz treat that rarely penetrates into a collection for it has a quiet sort of presence. With a five-piece band of unique sounds and mystical arrangements the flow of these music sheets drives home numerous calming influences. Tom & Joy seem to attain a talent to awaken the most positive and uplifting moments that their craft has to exhume. A spin that should be embraced over many a circumstance in front as many as possible for it feels so good!

Antiqua is a musical buffet of sounds stemming from bossa nova, R&B, and jazz that are able to distinguish themselves through the multi-cultural lyrics partnered with the performance. Talk about thinking outside the stage, Tom & Joy at times seem to have reinvented the term innovation fashioning a style too intricate to mirror.

“Broadway” is one example of their caféesque style as the taste of the French lifestyle reinvents itself through this piece. Botta’s double bass is ever so pronounced and turns “Broadway” into a stand out selection.

Look for a touch of pop funk in “Out Of My Mind” which exhibits strong rhythms blanketed with a smooth brass cover. This piece is one of two that are sung in English, “Be Mine” is the other.

Tom & Joy have offer the jazz community a gift with this release whose tones act as an audio therapist. For Antiqua sooths even those most stressful of moments. This effort an embraceable yet complex exchange of warm and fuzzy emotions sets the mood of many a listener. Antiqua gives tribute to all that feel and wish it to be good!
