Drummer Mike Reed’s first solo venture features a sequence of eight duets performed with fellow Chicago, IL., area musicians. Clocking in at thirty minutes and thirty seconds, the outing is short, sweet and in a roundabout way – to the point.
The musicians let it all hang out via episodes of free-form expression and vibrant call and response mechanisms. Reed engages guitarist Jeff Parker with a smack, dab approach to the drum-kit.
He pursues a lighthearted alien-like vernacular when partnering with ARP synth denizen Jim Baker and his blurting/popping analogue lines. On track six (all pieces are untitled), Reed’s cracking snare and cymbal swashes provide a tonal contrast to flutist Nicole Mitchell’s whimsical patterns. As the duo ventures into changeable ebbs and flows with the heat set on medium. In sum, the artists’ raw output transmits a sense of the dynamic where almost anything is liable to occur.
Mike Reed, drums; Jeff Parker, guitar; Nicole Mitchell, flute; Jim Baker, ARP synthesizer
