CD Reviews: Bonnie Bramlett and Mr. Groove Band: Roots, Blues & Jazz
Posted by: adminon Friday, March 17, 2006 - 07:46 AM
Reviews By Edward Blanco

Once a part of the sixties rock scene doing a stint as a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue and later with then husband, Delaney Bramlett, as part of the R&B group, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, singer/ actress Bonnie Bramlett returns to her first love, music to record Roots, Blues & Jazz on the ZOHO label. Collaborating with Bramlett on this recording is the Nashville-based ensemble the Mr. Groove Band. The Groovy sextet is comprised of producer/bassist Tim Smith, guitarist Roddy Smith, pianist Steve Willets, saxophonist Tim Gordon, Mark Stallings on the Hammond organ and drummer Donnie Marshall. While Bramlett leads on vocals she is accompanied by various background singers including daughter Bekka Bramlett and two former Ikettes, Robbie Montgomery and Jessie Lucas.

The music opens up with the rock standard “Love The One You’re With” in a soulful rendition of this classic. Bramlett’s raspy voice serves her well on such bluesy tunes as
“I Can Laugh About it Now” and “Gotcha”. The jazzy overtones come shinning through with “That Lucky Old Sun” that Bramlett sings softly accompanied by pianist Willets and guitarist Smith on one beautiful piece of music. Bramlett sings a cool beat on the other recognizable rock song “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”. Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” has that real Gospel feel to it. Bramlett’s distinctive singing style adds a certain texture to the other jazzy numbers, Nat Adderley’s “Work Song” and the inspiring soft and sweet “ Harlem Nocturne” one of the best cuts on the album.

A fine selection of Gospel-tinged, Soulful Blues and soft jazzy songs sung with emotion and feeling. A definite thumbs up for Roots, Blues & Jazz, a warm and entertaining album from a singer with a presence and unique singing style that compliments a talented band of musicians.
