By John Gilbert
CD Release Party for "Born To Swing" the new recording by Kelly due to
hit the streets on June 6.
Jazz vocalist Nancy Kelly along with John Heard on bass, Theo Saunders
at the piano and Lorca Hart manning the drums spun a tapestry of
explosive jazz at one of America's top jazz venues. Jo-Ann and Charlie,
the owners, have made quite a reputation booking the top talent in the
jazz world at this remarkable club.
Nancy Kelly seems to make history every time she appears both here and
abroad. With this fine trio Nancy ran the gamut from bop to (standards)
right out of the great American songbook.
When you have the musicians and the audience voicing magnanimous praise,
an artist has accomplished a rare feat and Kelly sure did that in no
uncertain terms. Among the luminaries in attendance to pay their
respects were some of Los Angeles' finest singers, Denise Donatelli,
Judy Wexler and Julie Kelly.
Miss Kelly carried "Jeanine" to new heights with a blistering version of
this jazz favorite. Kelly is a musician who plays most of the
instruments and her voice in and of itself is an instrument in a class
by itself. This tune rocked and jumped into orbit with some rapid fire
scatting that sent the crowd into yelps, applause and gleeful whistles.
One listener remarked to your 'humble correspondent' that she had never
heard a singer with such a command of the lyric along with a most
powerful stage presence.
"New York State Of Mind" is a tune that Kelly sang in remembrance of the
Sept. 11 WTC attack, and she performed it so poignantly that it brought
tears to a few, and this writer in particular. It will never get any
better than this.
There were so many memorable moments in this performance that it would
be impossible to enumerate them all..."I've Got The World On A
String".."Till There Was You" "More Than You Know" were among the songs
featured on her new album "Born To Swing"
The accompaniment for Kelly were clearly inspired and responded to this
performance with superb backing. Theo Saunders is a magnificent artist
and he added a potent libation to an already intoxicating evening. Lorca
Hart on drums and the legendary John Heard on bass were dual straws that
stirred this powerful mixture of jazz and ballads.
Like Carl Saunders, the hippest of the hip on trumpet, Nancy Kelly gives
a million dollar performance. I have said this once and it bears
repeating, Nancy Kelly is the best pure jazz singer that I have ever
heard, bar none, I repeat bar none.
