Dim the lights, kick back and enjoy these intimately performed compositions/improvisations by three prominent modern jazz artisans. In a way, the album title says it all. But there’s quite a bit of goodness taking place under the hours of darkness here. It’s sort of like the “buddy-system,” where the trio contrasts, complements and revitalizes themes while embarking upon three-way exchanges, largely based upon talent and intuition.
With subtle grace and explosive outbreaks, multi-woodwind aces John Tchicai and Charlie Kohlhase execute variable mini-motifs, while occasionally expanding matters into buoyant swing movements. And with guitarist Garrison Fewel generating a musical intersection, the musicians explore linear and flat plane tone poems, generally spiced-up with soulful deliberations. Now and then, they switch gears via peppery unison lines, where notions of a large ensemble subdivide into smaller focus groups, with the aspirations of reinventing previously applied frameworks. Ultimately, the artists spawn airy themes, awash with emotional outpourings, and lyrically rich forays. – Glenn Astarita
