By Edward Blanco
New York-based saxophonist Patrick Cornelius and session player in the New York jazz scene, emerges with a debut recording of contemporary and mainstream jazz music with Lucid Dream. A nine track album with six originals, the Charlie Parker “Billie’s Bounce” and two other covers, the music here is played in a mid-tempo groove and is quite entertaining. Cornelius plays alto and soprano and is joined by pianist Aaron Parks, Sean Conly on bass, drummer Kendrick Scott, Nick Vagenas on trombone and Gretchen Parlato providing vocals on “April Rain.”
The program starts off with the bouncy “This Chair Is Broken” with the leader on alto followed by a Vagenas trombone solo. Cornelius turns to the soprano on “Winds Of Change” giving way to a fine piano excursion by Parks. “Pretty Self – Explanatory” is a tempo changing arrangement with the longest playing time at over eight minutes. Displaying his range on soprano, Cornelius whistles through “Billie’s Bounce.” One of my favorite tracks is the slow and melodic “Alone Now” that Cornelius plays softly in the mellow piece of this session.
The rapid-paced and title cut “Lucid Dream,” showcases a blistering performance by Cornelius on alto accompanied by stylish solos on the Fender Rhodes by Parks and bassist Conly. The set rounds out with the rhythm-based “Don’t Give Up” and the light “April Rain.”
An impressive debut by one of the new young lions of jazz, Patrick Cornelius crafts a captivating and engaging recording featuring new charts and excellent musicianship by the leader and crew. Lucid Dream is a disc worth more than a listen and sure to garnish critical acclaim.
