CD Reviews: Gerry Gibbs and The Thrasher Big Band..Live At Luna ..Whaling City Sound 2005

By John Gilbert
This a live recording from Luna in San Antonio.
Drummer Gerry Gibbs has assembled a swinging throwback 18 piece band
with a modern twist, and not 'modern' in the sense of the dissonance of
the music in that genre today.
"You've Changed" features the vocal of Joan Carroll behind the dynamic
backing of this superlative band. This is a beautiful rendition of a
classic tune that never ages.
"Playing The Field" Another fine excursion into the vocalization of Joan
Carroll, who may be the best singer whom I have never heard. She
articulates clearly, shows some range and sings in tune. What a joy.
Gerry Gibbs and his aggregation are true exponents of 'swing' with an
ensemble that is bop inspired with charts that move and groove
emphatically and a vocalist that can SING. This is a definite keeper for
all you connoisseurs of jazz at it's best.
