Ted Brown's
musical career began in 1946 when he was in an Army band
that included good players from Chicago and New York who hipped him to
Lester Young and Charlie Parker. It was in the military that Ted met Warne
Marsh and Don Ferrara, which eventually led to Ted’s years of studying with
Lennie Tristano, as well as the beginning of his lifelong association with
players such as Marsh, Lee Konitz, Ronnie Ball, and Sal Mosca. Ted was
inspired by Lennie’s knowledge and teaching methods. Studying with Lennie
allowed Ted to learn to stretch out and develop into a real improvising jazz musician.
Ted’s recording career started in 1956 with Ronnie Ball and Kenny Clarke.
In 1956 he also recorded 2 albums with fellow Tristano student and tenor
saxophonist, Marsh, plus his first LP as leader with Marsh and Art Pepper titled
"Free Wheeling." He participated in the 1959 date, "Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre"
on Verve Records, which also included Marsh and Bill Evans.
In 1976, Ted resumed studies with Tristano and recorded again with Konitz.
In ‘85 and ’87 Criss Cross Records signed Ted for two albums: one with Jimmy Raney,
Hod O’Brien and Buster Williams at Rudy Van Gelder's studio and the other with Hod and
Dutch bassist, Jacques Schols in Amsterdam.
Ted did concerts in Holland with Konitz in 1988. He returned to Europe with Lee in ‘98 and
recorded the Steeplechase CD "Dig It" in '99. This led to another Lee Konitz CD for BMG
with John Abercrombie and Marc Johnson. In 2001, Ted and Lee performed in Paris, Nimes,
and Brussels as well as New York City clubs such as Birdland.
Just before his 75th birthday in 2002, Ted recorded another CD for Steeplechase
titled "Preservation." Blue Jack Jazz Records of Amsterdam will release in 2006
a recording of Ted with Hod O'Brien. Ted has been dedicated to the art of
jazz improvisation for over 60 years and continues to pursue that ambition.
Ted's rhythm section of Jon Easton, Don Messina and Bill Chattin have been
playing together since the mid 1980s. Both Jon and Bill studied with Lennie
Tristano in the 1970s and Jon continued his studies with Sal Mosca for
another twelve years. This trio recently released their first CD together
on the Cadence Jazz Label in 2005. Don and Bill have also recorded as the
rhythm section for Sal Mosca, Larry Bluth, Jimmy Halperin, and Rick Moore. Messina and Chattin have performed
previously at Trumpets with Larry Bluth, Sal Mosca, and Jimmy Halperin.
The Ted Brown Quartet will improvise on the standards of Gershwin, Porter,
Kern, as well as on the compositions of Charlie Parker, Warne Marsh, Lee
Konitz, and Lennie Tristano.
