By Edward Blanco
Industrious Noise Trio is the debut album of a Boston-based small ensemble of the same name led by saxophonist Chris Veilleux and accompanied by Phil Sargent on guitar and drummer Mike Connors. The album boasts seven original compositions, primarily by Sargent, of new avant-garde music blended with shades of hard rock and sprinkled with an influence of Balkan style rhythms. The program starts off with what I took to be a mishmash of sounds in a most probably heavily improvised cut with “Nugget.” Adding some definable beat and rhythm to the music, “Trio,” the second track, fares better in a quick moving Balkan tone.
The group slows the pace down with the delicious and very misty “Dawn.” With a full eleven minutes of the avant-garde taste, “Nhf” showcases each member of the band with an excellent performance by Veilleux on the reeds. I particularly enjoyed the low-tempo melodies of “Longmeadow” which comes across as a moving and introspective tune.
The band comes out of the gate with fire on the finale “Makedonya,” with an electrifying guitar riff by Sargent on the intro which then progresses to capture the fine solo shots by Veilleux backed up by Connors steady drum beat.
For those who favor the avant-garde and free jazz styles found on this disc, Industrious Noise Trio provides plenty of new material that stretches the boundaries of the jazz genre yet makes for an interesting musical experience. A good debut and a promising beginning.
