CD Reviews: The Young Brothers “Tales Of Time” CD-2006 Independent
Posted by: adminon Wednesday, December 20, 2006 - 03:00 PM
Reviews By Glenn Astarita

Virginia denizens, Alphonso (bass) and Tim Young (piano) communicate a well-rounded jazz piano trio format via this uplifting and divergent effort. With tenor saxophonist Ben Baker, vocalist Sara Jones and guitarist Todd Harrison contributing on selected tracks, the music intimated here sparks a sprightly viewpoint to a tried and true methodology. However, it’s not about frills or trickery.

Simply stated, the trio effortlessly whirls through jazz standards and two Tim Young originals, enamored by a lyrically refreshing sequence of musical events. With harmonically attractive spins on “Skylark,” “Speak Low,” and other time-honored works, the band merges a delicate edge with controlled firepower. On Duke Ellington’s “Just Squeeze Me (But Don’t Tease Me),” Tim Young injects finesse atop bassist Bhagwan Khalsa’s bouncy bass lines Alphonso Young’s soft brushwork. They pursue an easy gait, but also venture into high-octane swing vamps to complement offbeat funk metrics and a breezy take on “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” featuring Baker’s floatation-like sax lines. In sum, there is a lot to like throughout the preponderance of this nicely-articulated set. – Glenn Astarita
