By John Gilbert
Anne Kerry Ford possesses a cultured tone with clear articulation and
when the majority of arrangements are by Roger Kellaway, this
collaboration becomes a study in musical artistry. There are 15 tracks
on this recording most of which were performed live at the Philharmonic
Hall in Cologne, Germany with the WDR big band. All songs were composed
by Kurt Weill.
Ford sings with passion and this element is evident in "My Ship" a song
that has always lingered in the ear of the discerning listener.
John Boswell at the piano adds much to this number with artfully crafted
accompaniment.
"One Life To Live" marches jauntily along as Ford parlays this Weill
composition with lyrics by Ira Gershwin to a delightful and cleverly
constructed `coup de maitre.
"Youkali" Backed by the WDR big band is replete with a sophisticated and
urbane message. Anne Kerry Ford exhibits range
and the ability to tell a musical story with charm and compelling
delight.
These are but a few of the tracks on this recording that is filled with
fine orchestral backing and vocal mastery. The musicians are seasoned
performers, both in the big band concept and the more intimate format
with a small ensemble.
Anne Kerry Ford is obviously classically trained and that is evident in
her control, range and the intense way that she sings the lyric in a
manner that becomes a personal communcation to the listener. Charm,
grace and culture are the bywords on this fine project.
