A songwriter, pianist and singer, Netherlands-born Ellen Honert makes her debut CD with this recording of six originals and six covers in a smooth light jazz fashion surrounded by a cadre of excellent musicians. Breath of The Soul is in fact a breath of fresh new material and interpretations of some classic scores all arranged by Frank Martin who also contributes on the acoustic piano, keyboards and the Hammond B-3 organ. Among the other notables appearing on this album are Alex Acuna (drums/percussion), Andy Narell (steel pans), Tuck and Patti (guitar/vocals),Dori Caymmi (guitar/vocals) and the Turtle Island String Quartet.
Staring off with a nice intro by Pedro Eustache on the flute, the album’s opening track, “Blue” explodes with a percussive samba flavored catchy melody that Honert voices with forceful elegance. Joining in on the fun is Dori Caymmi on vocals and the guitar in probably the best number on the album. Perhaps just as terrific, Honert’s “Spring” is a beautiful love ballad sung with grace by the vocalist and featuring the Turtle Island String Quartet giving the tune that heavenly symphonic feel.
I truly loved “Two Lonely People” served up quite nicely in song having a bit of Brazilian jazz to it. Honert shines on George Duke’s “Someday” accompanied by the supporting vocals of Tony Lindsay and brief solo expressions by altoist Marc Russo in a very hip smooth jazz interpretation of this classic. Andy Narell makes his presence on the warm and light “Warm” that the singer carries to the heart.
The album continues with a host of other great tunes all inspiring and full of rich melodies. I was very impressed by Honert’s talents and the range of her voice. Breath of the Soul contains very fine music and a powerful performance by a vocalist who seems perfect for the jazz setting. One heck of a debut!
