By: Edward Blanco
Jazz vocalist Teraesa Vinson presents her second album with Next To You in which she records an intimate session of beautiful light jazz with guitarist and friend Tom Dempsey.
The duo have collaborated on many projects including Vinson’s debut CD, Opportunity Please Knock. Vinson possesses lush sweet vocals perfect for voicing the kind of music contained on this album. Guitarist Dempsey provides the only musical support here and does so in stellar fashion playing sharp crisp chords throughout his many solos.
There are twelve songs on this disc all standards including several oft played classics like
“I Remember You”, “Foolish Heart,” “Nobody Else But Me,” and the pop tune “Ribbon In The Sky.” The duo delivers an engaging and enchanting performance especially on such songs as “Triste,” “Foolish Heart,” and the title track “Next To You.”
I have a particular bias for big band music where the more players the better, but must confess that the dynamic duo’s performance here did strike an impressive note with me.
Teraesa Vinson and partner Tom Dempsey succeed in capturing the emotions and passion that the composers of these songs intended to convey, with only a single guitar and the charming voice of an angel.
Next To You is essentially an album of soft jazz and warm melodies without the heavy instrumentals that sometimes get in the way of delivering the musical statement that Vinson and Dempsey do so well here.
