By John Gilbert
Jack Reilly's music can best be described as jazz in the classical mode.
He has fashioned his unique style from years of experience, study and
performing the world over.
The life of Reilly was interrupted in 2002 with the dreaded onset of
cancer. His recovery came to pass and in a salute to Johns Hopkins
Cancer center, Reilly composed this suite and dedicated each piece to
individual Doctors and staff at Hopkins.
The suite with Jack Reilly at the piano, Dave Green, bass and Stephen
Keogh, drums was performed live at St. Cyprians church in London in 2004
and at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center on April 6, 2005.
"Two Me" is a waltz in a jaunty mood that bounces along merrily as
Reilly coaxes the bottom out of every note. Nice brush work by Keogh on
the drums complements Jack's impressive soliloquy.
"Willow Weep For Me" Jack Reilly puts a new twist on this lovely ballad.
Reilly's solo has the feel of a Gershwin number in it's presentation.
The twists and turns are both elevating and heart warming. His facility,
ideas and dexterity coupled with an extraordinary knowledge of his
instrument and the ability to express his emotions in a musical sense
are inspiring and a total joy.
This recording consists of two discs and 14 compositions. This suite is
a true representation of jazz performed in a 'classical' style that is
Reilly's alone. The listener with a discerning ear will find this album
a bountiful expression of joy, sadness and recovery in the truest sense.
