CD Reviews: Asaf Sirkis & The Inner Noise, “The Song Within”
Posted by: editoron Saturday, November 03, 2007 - 11:29 AM
Reviews By: Edward Blanco

Israeli-born drummer Asaf Sirkis moved to the UK in 1999 and has been a part of the British jazz and the world music scene ever since. Having played rock, free jazz and a variety of ethnic music back in Israel, Sirkis’s compositions and music are non-traditional and is reflected in “The Song Within.” Expect to hear some interesting tones on this disc as the music is a mixture of modern jazz rock containing elements of the classical sound.

Sirkis achieves this employing an unusual trio which consists of Mike Outram playing the electric and acoustic guitars and features Steve Lodder manning the keyboards and the church organ. Essentially an organ trio, by using the church organ the music comes across with depth and reaches in an almost spiritual way. Not your typical jazz sounds, that’s for sure.

The leader’s drumming prowess is quite evident throughout the nine track album. Guitarist Outram provides that progressive rock sound with his furious riffs while Lodder’s play on the church organ is religiously good.

The tune “Theme for Gary,” sounds like it belongs in a church setting as Lodder pontificates on the organ keys. The title track moves rather slowly showcasing Lodder on the keyboards as Sirkis provides heavy support on the sticks and cymbals.

The nine-minute “When You Ask Why,” is an intricate piece a bit melancholy but nevertheless engaging. Other tunes like “Nothingness First Part” (Parts I and II) provide another perspective to this unique album.

“The Song Within” shines a light on the introspective side of classical jazz/rock music by providing a unique sound from an unusual trio who play very tight. Asaf Sirkis contributes challenging and sophisticated charts while delivering a standout performance here.
