CD Reviews: Fred Randolph, “New Day”
Posted by: editoron Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 12:50 PM
Reviews By: Edward Blanco

Versatile bassist Fred Randolph presents his second CD as leader with one burner of a recording containing elements of straight ahead, bebop and a touch of bossa nova jazz with the dawn of a “New Day.” Offering twelve new creative compositions here, the music sizzles and moves to exciting grooves with the help of a first-rate supporting cast that makes the album a pleasure to hear.

Randolph plays the acoustic bass on all tracks except on “Soul Stuff” where he uses the electric bass and on “The Wish” where he plays the fretless electric bass. Joining the bassist on this recording are trumpeter Erik Jekabson, saxophonist Rob Roth and organist Dan Zemeleman, all members of his standard quintet along with a host of other instrumentalist and vocalist Sandy Cressman.

Cressman provides warm vocals on the soft bossa nova-shaded “Melodia Sem Fim (Endless Melody),“ one of several outstanding tunes on this disc and is followed by a beautiful soft ballad in “The Longing” where Roth and Jekabson provide delicate solos setting up Randolph for a light bass line of his own.

The program opens up with a couple of intricate melodies on the up beat “Being Set Free” and the fast moving and jumpy “Eclipse” containing solid solo performances from Roth on tenor. The tempo changes on the Latin jazz-like “The Wish” which moves to a much lighter groove and features Randolph on a fretless electric bass solo.

“90 Dollar Drive” is one of the more hard-driving boppish numbers that Randolph writes was “…a fun, wacky musical journey.” The tune “Ice Nine” has that world-music feel to it and contains some nice percussions from Michael Goerlitz. There are other notable tracks that lend a very jazzy quality to this album.

Randolph and crew provide exciting accessible and very energetic music on “New Day” and demonstrate an ability to play a range of styles with sophistication and artistry. This is one album that critics and jazz audiences alike will appreciate.
