On one of the best explorations of warm Latin jazz from a light trio, Los Angeles-based jazz guitarist Dave Askren provides a fresh assault on Afro-Cuban rhythms on his new recording “Trio Nuevo +.” Leading his LA working trio, Askren rearranges seven jazz standards and contributes a couple of originals in a sensational session of Latin jazz not to be missed. With bassist Eddie Resto and drummer Walter Rodriguez forming the core trio, Askren brings in Ramon Banda on three tracks, hence the “Trio Nuevo “plus” title to top off the recording.
Though Askren’s artful and clean guitar lines here lead the music throughout, one cannot overlook the percussive background provided by both Rodriguez and Banda, an essential element of all Latin genre music.
The music opens up with an original score in tribute to McCoy Tyner on the brisk and lively “Tiene Tyner” showcasing Askren’s prowess on the instrument as he plays both the bass line and melody at the same time. On John Coltrane’s energetic “Naima,” Askren plucks his acoustic nylon guitar in stylish fashion giving way to a momentary fine bass solo from Resto before closing out a nice Afro-Cuban groove.
The trio slows down the tempo on the Burke/Van Huesen classic “But Beautiful,” and the Charlie Mingus standard “Peggy’s Blue Skylight,” two numbers where one could envision a romantic dance to a slow and sensuous grind. In contrast, T-Monk’s immortal “Epistrophy” is treated to a new and interesting read with Rodriguez featured on the Afro-Peruvian instrument, the Cajon capturing a very percussive sound here.
Askren leaves two of the best tunes for the finale beginning with up tempo Wayne Shorter burner, “Yes or No” shining on the guitar and matched by the constant beats from
Banda and Rodriguez on the conga. The last piece, ”P.M.” an Askren original previously recorded on his last album, ”Some Other Things” closes out one of the best sessions of light Latin jazz recorded to date.
“Trio Nuevo +” is a masterpiece of a recording that jazz guitarist Dave Askren and his “new trio” of Latin jazz players, can be more than proud of. This is indeed a gem of an album that critics will praise and jazz audiences will love.
