Lem Barney, the former Detroit Lions cornerback and Hall of Fame standout who played in seven pro bowls, was on hand to support Christian McBride at this year's official Detroit International Jazz Festival announcement and kickoff breakfast held at the Guardian building in downtown Detroit. The Philadelphia bassist was named this year's Guest Artist-in-Residence for the 29th Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival, to be held Labor Day Weekend at Hart Plaza from Friday, August 29 through Monday, September 1. Barney is also fondly remembered, along with teammate Mel Farr, as a background vocalist on Marvin Gaye's 1971 classic, What's Going On, during the time when Gaye tried out (unsuccessfully) for the Lions.
Billed as A Love Supreme: The Philly/Detroit Summit, the 2008 Festival will celebrate the storied jazz and soul traditions of these two great American cities. Among the various activities that McBride is spearheading, he is looking forward to the Philly/Detroit jazz tribute to Marvin Gaye, featuring singers Lalah Hathaway, Rahsaan Patterson and Jose James. "Having Lem at the announcement has got me psyched up for the festival. What he has achieved here in sports and the community speaks volumes. I am a Philly guy, but whenever I am in Detroit, it feels like home."
