These Northeasterners really have that New Orleans thing down to an exact science. With frothy funk beats, fiery arrangements and trad-jazz serving as the core, this is the follow-up to the ensemble’s 2003 effort titled “Year of the Snake” which I had slated as a top-ten pick for the New Orleans Weekly Gambit.
They execute these largely Ken Field (sax) penned works via the exuberance and sentiment of a second-line band, while kicking up the various rhythmic metrics on the joyously garrulous piece, “Just a Closer Walk.” And the three-man horn section shouts out jubilant choruses during the super-tight groove, heard on “Slots. Naturally, the musicians integrate the New Orleans vibe yet like the previous album, they proceed with a very hip demeanor. It’s a multidimensional outing indeed, where they inject some Bavarian Oom-Pah horns effects during the unit’s affectionate take on the traditional, “Give Me Jesus.”
Vocalist Gabrielle Agachiko belts out the lyrics to another old time favorite, “Down By the Riverside, all enamored by the hornists’ interweaving lines amid some lamentation that might spur notions of the post hurricane Katrina climate. The instrumentalists even morph Ornetter Coleman’s “Chippie” into a fun-filled Mardi Gras drenched jamboree. Otherwise, the artists kick out the proverbial jams via some hot n’ nasty bump and grind expositions to complement their good-natured rowdiness. Three cheers and five stars are in order for this thoroughly happening 2008 studio set. – Glenn Astarita
