CD Reviews: Ralph Lalama Quartet, “Energy Fields”
Posted by: editoron Friday, September 26, 2008 - 08:04 AM
Reviews By: Edward Blanco

The Ralph Lalama Quartet releases its debut with Energy Fields but is certainly not the first recording for the members of the band—all seasoned musicians with a discography of their own. Leader Ralph Lalama is known as a tenor saxophonist with a muscular tone clearly evident from his power-infused performance on the opening Woody Shaw piece “The Moontrane.” The balance of the group is comprised of guitarist John Hart, bassist Rick Petrone and drummer Joe Corsello.

Lalama’s “Nonchalant” is the only original among the nine modern jazz charts on the repertoire. The saxophonist dices this disc with an array of aggressive solos driving the music in a boppish fashion. Unique arrangements of such standards as “Old Folks,” Van Heusen’s “Like Someone In Love” and Wayne Shorter’s “United” provide fresh new approaches to these old tunes.

There’s a terrific gentle treatment by Lalama on “Indian Summer” offering a wonderful solo performance not to be missed. The familiar “Just In Time” is taken for a swinging ride by the group beginning with nice bass line work from Petrone later engaged by Lalama and the others. Foe the finale, Alec Wilder’s lesser know “Blackberry Winter” serves to close the program on a warm note with tender guitar phrasings from Hart, soft brush strokes from Corsello and tempered saxophone voice from the leader.

All you really need is one listen to Energy Fields to feel the heat from one very energetic session of jazz as saxophonist Ralph Lalama and his quartet deliver the electricity that will turn you on and keep you charged up till the end. One excellent recording that is highly recommended.
