By John Gilbert
Mike Melvoin (piano) Kim Park (alto sax)
At the outset let me state that Mike Melvoin is an extraordinary
pianist. His style has that Powellesque touch that all of the great
keyboardists have and when he's paired with the likes of an altoist like
Kim Park it becomes a magical combination in the finest bebop tradition
(and then some)
"Speak Low" speaks volumes. Melvoin comps warm and soulfully as Park
traverses the boundaries of this tune with abandon. Park has the tone of
Bird but with his own emphatic message. Mike Melvoin let's the ideas
flow as he creates his own pianistic directive. Some interesting 8 bar
exchanges make the album title "The Art Of Conversation" more than
apropos.
"I Remember You" The familiar strains of this jazz gem are taken to new
heights with Park opening matters with a brilliant solo. Melvoin urges
him on with gentle prodding and then follows with some sermonizing of
his own in a manner most joyful.
Mike Melvoin and Kim Park are a pair that can beat a straight any day in
any way. They both have the sound that reflects the era of Parker yet
both retain that singular individuality that is the soul of the
superincumbent musician.
