CD Reviews: The Flip Side Blood Red/Groove Kings Visual Music GKI

Karl Stober
Irene Marc, is that vibrant and charismatic vocalist that grips you from your chair and catapults you into a “rockin rumpus room groove” that has been void in the musical galaxy. Ms Marc is, along with the many talented and abstract sounds of the Groove Kings, an experience not to be just a random push-n-play but to be listened to intently and often.

Press Releases: Tony Adamo Covers Tower Of Power

TONY ADAMO COVERS TOWER OF POWER
Fred Harris
Los Angeles, CA
Singer-songwriter, Tony Adamo and his producer-guitarist, Jerry Stucker have re-grooved the Tower of Power (TOP) song “This Time It’s Real,” and have added their unmistakable smooth groove to this TOP hit classic. Adamo told us that during a recent meditation he had a musical insight about the music for a cover for this tune. He brought the idea to his producer, Jerry Stucker who immediately contacted “Doc” Kupka about a remake. This was when they discovered that “Doc” had been thinking about retooling “This Time It’s Real” along with several other TOP tunes. “Doc” was knocked out when he heard the rough mix and gave the high sign for them groove on.
The horn section for Adamo’s new cover of “This Time It’s Real” is made up of current TOP members, “Doc” Kupka, Tom Politzer (solo) and returning member, Mic Gillette, who wrote the horn arrangement for the remake. “Doc” suggested Adamo take a listen to several other TOP classics including “Recapture the Magic” and “Knock Yourself Out.” Adamo and Stucker now have several other TOP tunes simmering on the back burner.
On August 1st, Sandy Shore of Smoothjazz.com is launching a national radio promo for “This Time It’s Real.” This song will definitely be added to Adamo’s new 2010 CD release. For more information go to www.mypace.com/tonyrocadamo

Lindsey Horner – The Sidemen Chronicles: Rob Thomas
|
Posted by: ArtistShare on Friday, July 31, 2009 - 09:11 AM |
|
Renowned bassist Lindsey Horner is hard at work on his newest ArtistShare project, “Undiscovered Country”. It features a stellar lineup of musicians, all providing their own, unique voices to the project. This week, we'll be looking more in depth at Rob Thomas, who will be playing violin on the album.
Rob Thomas is widely considered to be one of the most original, technically adept and powerful violinists playing jazz and contemporary music. JazzTimes calls him "a violinist of exceptional creative resources... riveting as a solo voice with a rich complex tone that can sing or shriek". Thomas has been ’singing and shrieking’ in and around New York City since moving there in 1991. In the mid ’90’s he toured and recorded extensively with ’downtown’ mainstays, The Jazz Passengers (who often featured guest vocalists Deborah Harry and Elvis Costello). He is a veteran of Gregg Bendian’s Mahavishnu Project, and can be heard on two critically acclaimed recordings by that adventurous repertory ensemble. Since 2001, Thomas has held the violin chair in the String Trio of New York, being the fifth in an series of notable violinists to join guitarist James Emery and bassist John Lindberg in this illustrious group, now in it’s 32nd year. Three outstanding recordings have resulted in the "Thomas era". As a free-lancer, Rob has also contributed to recordings by Lee Konitz, Andy Summers, Los Jovenes Del Barrio and Marc Ribot. He has also performed with The John Handy 'Monterey' Quintet, Max Roach, Jan Hammer, Bobby Previte, Claude Williams, The Soldier String Quartet, Akua Dixon's Quartette Indigo, and Ute Lemper’s ’Punishing Kiss’ band.

CD Reviews: Brad Shepik “Human Activity Suite” CD-2009 Songlines
|
Posted by: editor on Thursday, April 02, 2009 - 05:11 PM |

Glenn Astarita
This album finds New York City-based guitarist Brad Shepik imparting a worldly musical stance into his concern for climate change and the earth’s general well-being. Long considered one of the top progressive jazz guitarists, the artist’s inventive stylizations and enviable chops have graced albums with trumpeter Dave Douglas and drummer Paul Motian, among others of note. Therefore, his broad music vernacular extends into multifaceted frameworks, evidenced on this rather mesmeric effort.

Somerset, New Jersey – Critical acclaim for PJ Parker’s (www.pjparker.net) third CD continues to come in, with the inclusion of “Dreams Are Meant For Two” in JazzPolice.com’s “Favorite Recordings of 2008: Volcaluminaries.”
In including “Dreams” on the list, JazzPolice.com’s (www.jazzpolice.com) Andrea Canter called PJ’s performance “magic.”
“With ‘Dreams Are Meant for Two,’ PJ Parker has issued a definitive statement of intent—to challenge the heart, to unlock memories, to reinvent the familiar, to entertain. And to do so on her own terms, with her own voice,” Canter writes.

CD Reviews: Saltman Knowles, “Return of The Composer”
|
Posted by: editor on Saturday, January 03, 2009 - 11:53 AM |
|
By Edward Blanco
Bassist Mark Saltman and pianist William Knowles have made four previous recordings and continue their collaboration with strong melodic charts focusing on what the liner notes state“is a return to solid song writing and compositions,” which explains the title of the album. One major difference from other recordings, according to the co-leaders, is freely employing what they say is the “use of vocalese (using the voice as another instrument). To this degree, the group enlists the help of vocalist Lori Williams-Chisholm on some tracks as part of the instrumental ensemble in which she is heard primarily on wordless vocals and scatting except on the finale “Pain Management” where she sings the lyrics in her high-register voice.

By: Edward Blanco
Featuring a guitar/Hammond B3 organ trio set up on this second ZOHO release for New York guitarist Greg Skaff, performing a collection of ballads, blues and providing new reads on a couple of old standards, East Harlem Skyline presents melodic straight ahead jazz in the vain of traditional organ trio music. To this end Skaff is joined by pianist George Colligan who here mans the Hammond B3 organ and is accompanied by E.J Strickland on the drums forming the core trio of the album. The rhythm section is different only on the opening piece “Willie D” where the guitarist is joined by George Laks on the organ, Darryl Jones on bass and Charles Drayton on drums.

By: Edward Blanco
Simply put, Nova is one of the finest Brazilian and contemporary jazz albums I’ve had the pleasure of appraising this year. Grammy-nominated guitarist Anthony Wilson collaborates with the largely unknown Brazilian guitarist Chico Pinheiro and some of the best up and coming young Brazilian musicians presenting a mixture of original modern Brazilian music with fresh reads of compositions from the likes of Wayne Shorter, Joao Donato and Dorival Caymmi.

CD Reviews: Alexis Cole: Zingaro (Canopy Jazz)
|
Posted by: editor on Wednesday, June 04, 2008 - 07:42 PM |

Review by John Stevenson
Taking on the jazz standards tradition is hard work.
It isn’t enough for musicians to be familiar with the books, so to speak, be they the Great American Songbook, the Real Book or the Fake Book for that matter. No, that by itself won’t cut it. In the case of the singers, interpretation is key. Being unique and bringing something different to the table really matters.
On Zingaro, young Alexis takes on the jazz standards and walks a musical tightrope of sorts, dispensing with the support of a piano and drums and putting her vocals out front, save for the accompaniment of guitarist Ron Affif and acoustic bass player Jeffry Eckels - inspired choices, if one may say so.

By: Edward Blanco
Bay area vocalist Tony Adamo garnished a five star rating from Smoothjazz.com for his latest release, “Straight Up Deal.” However, there’s a lot more to the smooth jazz sound found on this recording than what they would have you believe. Tony Adamo, equipped with a deep baritone voice, belts out some real gyrating funk, R&B and soulful jazz tunes on this fourteen piece CD, which also includes a selection of straight ahead beautiful contemporary jazz vocals.

CD Reviews: Ron Kaplan..New York..Kapland Records 2007

John Gilbert
Ron Kaplan, Vocals, Larry Dunlap, Piano, Seward McCain, Bass, Akira
Tana, Drums, Erik Jekabson, Trumpet, Noel Jewkes, Sax / Clarinet.
Ron Kaplan pays homage to the American Songbook in fine fashion. He has
a voice whose texture is suitable for this idiom.
"Jumpin With Symphony Sid" is a jazz classic and Kaplan leaves no meat
on the bone with his hip vocal. A nice relaxed trumpet solo by Jekabson
followed by Jewkes' sax solo in the same bag pays tribute to Prez nicely

Glen Astarita
CD-2007 Impetus Records
There seems to be a tidal wave of jazz piano trios and female vocalists these days. And of course, whether the market can bear such an influx remains to be seen. Interestingly, Russia-reared vocalist Masha Campagne communicates a thoroughly-hip and venturous command of the Brazilian-jazz vernacular. A resident of San Francisco since 1991, Ms Campagne has been an active performer within the City’s jazz scene. On this recent release, comprised of Weber Lago’s tastefully enacted arrangements, the diva’s softly expressive vocals convey a sense of ownership with pieces by Jobim, Cole Porter and others.

Press Releases: You can buy Shares in Top UK Jazz Star Symeon Cosburn
|
Posted by: eJazzNews Reader on Friday, November 24, 2006 - 07:11 AM |
|
Symeon Cosburn, one of the first UK jazz influenced artists to explore the use of “Sellaband” a new music portal Website to promote his career further has already raised over $1100 by selling shares in his music in just under four weeks on the site. The basic concept of “Sellaband” is to allow music fans, or “Believers” as they are referred to on the website, to buy a share in the Artist or Artists music publishing whom they believe will make it to stardom. The cost of a share is very low and the initial interest in the site prompted Symeon and his management to join the project. Unlike Symeon, many of the artists represented on the site are new to the music business, but the platform is designed to give artists of all styles and experience a fair and equal chance at drawing sponsors. After the artist reaches $50,000 in share sales they record for Sellaband and deliver an exclusive album to every shareholder/believer, then their music is put on the site as free downloads available to anyone. The royalties for the downloads are covered by advertising sponsorship, companies such as Heineken have already signed up, and those royalties are then split between the Artist, the website and the Believers. The more successful and downloaded an artist is, the more money they and their believers make.
