Lou Donaldson
Marc Myers reports about the alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson who at the age of 83 is still searching for the perfect note (Wall Street Journal). Donaldson plays for the sake of his audience and is, as Myers attests, "among the last of a generation of jazz-musician entertainers". Myers recalls Donaldson's career from his earliest records with Milt Jackson or Clifford Brown through his Blue Note years that brought about his biggest selling record "Alligator Boogaloo" in 1967 up to today. Donaldson is a major jazz artist, Myers writes, but his name isn't familiar because he was away from New York for too long: "Despite his six-decade career, he has yet to be named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts."

Matthew Shipp
Larry Blumenfeld attends a concert by the pianist Matthew Shipp at the Blue Note in New York and finds him "verbally (...) as combative as any boxer, taunting supposed foes through interviews" (Wall Street Journal). Shipp likes to attack Keith Jarrett, writes Blumenfeld, as much as Wynton Marsalis but also less controversial figures such as Herbie Hancock or Wayne Shorter. It all comes from the need "to get up and completely re-create the whole thing every day", says Shipp, criticizing the business surrounding improvised jazz which lacks infrastructure. Shipp sees himself as part of the "Black mystery school pianists", a line running from Thelonious Monk through Andrew Hill, Sun Ra or Randy Weston. Shipp is self-confident about his own place in the music, saying, "Musically, conceptually, no one has caught up with me yet" â and Blumenfeld attests that "At the piano â mouth shut, hands on the keys, mind focused on his personal definition of tradition â Mr. Shipp best makes his case."

Guelph Jazz Festival

1. Renowned artists featured at main stage Sangam performance
Billed as the main event of the 2010 Guelph Jazz Festival, Sangam features three of the most renowned players to grace this year's festival lineup. Legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd is joined by internationally celebrated tabla player Zakir Hussain and prolific young drummer Eric Harland.
Charles Lloyd, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, earned his Masters in Music at USC in Los Angeles, California. Heralded as "a master of the tenor saxophone and flute" by the Washington Post, he is largely responsible for the cross-over appeal of free-jazz with fans of the burgeoning psych-rock movement of the 1960s. This led to shared billings with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Cream in venues normally used exclusively for rock concerts.

Yangaroo wins motion on U.S. patent action fees
|
Posted by: editor on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 - 06:30 PM |
|
TORONTO, Aug. 25 /CNW/ - YANGAROO Inc. (TSX-V: YOO, OTC: YOOIF), the industry's leading secure digital media distribution company, reported that The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin denied a motion by Destiny Media Technologies Inc. (OTCBB:DSNY) ("Destiny") for attorney's fees, noting that Destiny had failed to prove that YANGAROO's case was unjustified or brought in bad faith. The Court held that Destiny had failed to prove that YANGAROO's case was unjustified or brought in bad faith because Destiny's own press releases provided sufficient information to create a belief that its servers could be located in the United States. The Court stated that the speed with which YANGAROO proceeded through this litigation undermined Destiny's assertion that YANGAROO was attempting to delay its resolution. YANGAROO agreed to proceed under the Fast Track procedure, agreed to limited discovery, and agreed to submit briefs on a single issue, and did not ask the Court for a single extension of time during the litigation. Finally, the Court noted that YANGAROO's claim was not precluded by existing law and, therefore, disagreed with Destiny's contention that the suit was baseless. YANGAROO has always believed, and continues to believe, that its claim against Destiny is meritorious.

WORLD FAMOUS BLUE NOTE CLUB HOSTS JAZZ LEGEND CARMEN LUNDY

JAZZ LEGEND CARMEN LUNDY MAKES HER FIRST APPEARANCE AT THE WORLD FAMOUS
BLUE NOTE CLUB, NEW YORK CITY, SEPT. 21 & 22 - 2010
New York City is a beacon, a magnet, an oasis of culture. To many, it is The Center Of It All.
For tourists; itâs the Statue Of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the sad ghostly space of the World Trade Center. For artists and art fans itâs the Guggenheim, the Museum Of Modern Art, the allure of the streets that Andy Warhol walked. For lovers of literature itâs the Strand Book Store, the New York Public Library, the Algonquin Hotel. Oh, but for music fans it might be the best place of all: for classical buffs itâs Lincoln Center For The Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Opera; for popular music fans itâs Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden; for rockers the sadly defunct Bottom Line and CBGBâs, now replaced by the Living Room and The Kitchen; and maybe best of all, for the jazz aficionado there is The Blue Note.
Although The Blue Note first opened its doors at the dawn of the 1980âs it carries the resonance of a longtime fixture of the New York City jazz scene. As one of the Blue Noteâs managers says simply of what is arguably the worldâs most popular jazz club, âThis is it.â This is it, indeed. Jazz legends that had left clubs behind for the concert stage decades before â Sarah Vaughn, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown â soon rediscovered a home at The Blue Note; delighting in its intimacy, honoring and valuing the performerâs proximity to the true jazz fan. More recent additions to the rich tapestry of Americaâs music that have trod that stage, literally following in the footsteps of those legends of jazz include Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter, Lee Ritenour and John Scofield.
Now jazz legend Carmen Lundy makes her first appearance ever at The Blue Note on September 21 & 22, 2010. Ms. Lundy will bring her show âCarmen Lundy and the Nu Jazz Songbook Experienceâ east from California to the streets and thoroughfares of New York City. Ms. Lundy will be featured on vocals and joining her for the Blue Note engagement will be a trio consisting of Anthony Wonsey on piano, Darryl Hall on bass, and Jameson Ross on drums. Ms. Lundy says of the engagement, âI am very excited about my upcoming dates at The Blue Note. Itâs always been a dream of mine to play The Blue Note because it provides one of the most intimate settings for both vocalist and music lover.â

The album, MERCY, The Bill McBirnie Duo/Quartet (featuring Robi Botos), won the award for Best Jazz at the 2009-2010 TIMA (Toronto Independent Music Awards). Of course, Bill thanked the musicians once again, all of whom made this outcome possible; namely, Robi Botos (piano), Pat Collins (bass) and John Sumner (drums). In addition, Bill extended special thanks to his co-producer, Pacy Shulman of Hilo Studio, who not only engineered but also mixed as well mastered MERCY. Pacy's workmanship was genuinely acoustic with absolute fidelity to the nature and quality of the musical undertaking which consisted quite simply of two blowing sessions.

The rap singer Notorious BIG had been influenced by jazz musicians such as Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker and Ella Fitzgerald, claims saxophonist Donald Harrison who had been a neighbor of the rap star killed in 1997, met him on the stoop and, learning about his interest in music, gave him homework such as scatting along to an Adderley saxophone solo. "We worked on various tonguing and speed and agility", Harrison explains in an NPR feature (NPR music).

Mel C Mel C is to perform with Peter Vettese at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival
A former Jethro Tull musician has defended his decision to have ex-Spice Girl Mel C make a guest appearance at his Edinburgh Jazz Festival show.
Peter Vettese said he "couldn't care less" that some jazz aficionados would think it was "sacrilege" he had invited a pop star to perform at the festival.
He said Mel C had the skill and ability to sing with him at his Wednesday show.
Vettese, who played with the rock band in the 80s, said Mel C was taking the event "very seriously".

Jazz trumpeter and composer, his genial, unmistakable sound became legendary

Blindfold tests ? invitations to identify players by listening to short snatches of their work ? have always been popular challenges in jazz circles. There have been a few innovators whom the cognoscenti could spot from the proverbial "handful of notes" (Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins might top the list), but the task gets tougher when it comes to the thousands of talented yet less influential locals from the multifarious jazz scenes of the world.

They took to the streets filling Woodbine Park then jammed into Kew Gardens all for the opportunity to hear first class talent. Music with all in mind â Jazz, Latin, Blues, World, you name it â everything was there for the sampling. The 22nd edition of the Beaches International Jazz Festival from the beginning had that 2010 return to Woodstock vibe. Yeah â even the face painting was in abundance if you were under six years old.

Prince
The popular singer Prince is known to love jazz and would like to become the musical director for a relaunch of the Nice Jazz Festival in France (Le Monde). The festival, once a big jazz event, had in the last decades become more of a pop music festival, although it regularly featured jazz artists (Ornette Coleman, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Chris Potter, and Pat Metheny being among this year's lineup). Prince's availability as potential musical director was made public on Sunday. His application dossier is a joined venture with two French producers, Pascal Bernardin and Emmanuel de Buretel, and has to be handed to the city of Nice by September 15th. GĂŠrard Drouot who produced the festival for the last three years doubts that an artist like Prince can organize a jazz festival and sees the move as a PR coup of Bernardin and de Buretel (Journal de Dimanche).
