Right from jump street this is one hot album. Chris Cortez is an
exciting guitarist and a great lyric writer, it gets no better than
this.
This CD has some fine accompaniment throughout and Cortez' message is
loud and clear with his very hip vocals. This is the kind of record that
will make you smile, tap your foot..or the organ of your choice for that
matter.. The timbre of Chris Cortez's voice is perfect for 'hip' jazz
and blues.
"My Way Is Better"..Man, this tune is hittin' home. This tune has bop
overtones with extraordinary and rapid fire solo by Cortez. His vocal
texture is reminiscent of Bob Dorough with a taste of Mose Allison...But
let it be known it is strictly from the soul of Cortez.
"Bad Attitude" Yeah Baby, Chris Cortez gets after this song with ultra
clever lyrics...Accompanying himself on guitar it gets hipper and hipper
as it progresses....I know a lot of cats that this number could be their
theme....
"Sweet Georgia Brown" The sax solo of Larry Panella is orbit bound
..Great ideation rooted in pure swing....Unison between Cortez and
Panella is a nice touch and the guitar solo is pure magic.
"Rhythm Method Blues" The rhythm method gave Cortez 7 offspring and
your humble reporter six..Again the lyric spells it out with incredible
style and (words) such as this..
"My wife was brought up Catholic,
She never says nope,
I blame all my problems on his highness, the Pope.
It seems we're blessed with new life
each time that we fuse.
I'd like to laugh but I've got the rhythm method blues.
This is a record that swaggers and struts with the best of any of the
singers or composers of this genre.
