MoMA TO PRESENT DEBUT OF HENRY THREADGILL’S 3+3 IN FINAL JAZZ CONCERT OF SUMMERGARDEN ON AUGUST 21
Summergarden 2005: New MoMA, New Music
The work, 3+3, gravitates around the three celli in the ensemble, a familiar theme in Threadgill’s previous works. Threadgill has written often for cello and has led many groups in which cello plays a major part.
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Henry Threadgill came out of the imaginative environs of the 1960s Chicago scene. His compositions demonstrate his experience in blues, gospel, Latin, jazz, classical music, reggae, polka, and marching bands, integrating his global influences into a singular and deeply personal style. Threadgill has presented music for dance and theater performances since the 1970s, and has toured the world many times, performing with his various ensembles in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Summergarden, a MoMA tradition since 1971, returns this summer after a three-year hiatus, during which the Museum underwent a major renovation and expansion. Since 1993, Summergarden has been a joint effort with The Juilliard School under the artistic direction of Joel Sachs, and this year is joined by Jazz at Lincoln Center, presenting leading jazz musicians performing new works on alternating Sundays through August 21, 2005.
MoMA has dedicated this year's Summergarden to the memory of Ethel Shein, MoMA’s former Director of Special Events, an ardent music lover who encouraged and supported this series in many ways over many years.
Summergarden is made possible by The Ethel P. Shein Fund for Music at MoMA, which is generously funded by Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman, Agnes Gund and Daniel Shapiro, and Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder. Additional support is provided by Paul D. Shein; Senator and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller IV; Nicholas, Benjamin, and Kate Shein; Richard L. Tooke; Carol E. Coffin and Tom Parrett; and Elizabeth Pozen.
Entrance to Summergarden is through the Sculpture Garden gate on West 54th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Summergarden is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are distributed outside the Sculpture Garden gate on 54th Street starting at 5:30 p.m. on the day of the concert. Tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and seating is limited and unreserved. The Sculpture Garden opens at 7:00 p.m., and concerts start at 8:00 p.m. and run approximately one hour to ninety minutes. The Sculpture Garden closes at 10:00 p.m. In the event of rain, concerts will take place inside the Museum in The Agnes Gund Garden Lobby, where seating will be very limited, and the 54th Street entrance will open at 7:30 p.m. Galleries are closed during Summergarden. Program information is also available to the public at www.moma.org or by calling 212-708-9491.
